Radamel Falcao in Monaco squad to face Man City but may not start

Monaco will make a late decision on whether or not to start forward Radamel Falcao in Wednesday's Champions League round-of-16 second leg against Manchester City.

Falcao, 31, took a heavy blow to the hip in the closing minutes of Monaco's 2-1 Ligue 1 win over Bordeaux on Saturday, and the club have been racing to get the Colombia international fit to face City.

"It's a little better, but I don't know if he'll be able to start the match," Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim told reporters after naming Falcao in his squad for the game. "We'll wait until [Wednesday] to see if he'll be able to start the game."

Falcao scored a brace and had a penalty saved in the first leg, in which City twice came from behind before securing a 5-3 advantage to take with them to Monaco.

According to Southampton manager Claude Puel -- who spent 24 years at Monaco as a player and coach -- City boss Pep Guardiola's possession-based tactics could prove his side's undoing at the Stade Louis II.

"It's in that team's interest to have the ball," he told L'Equipe. "[Yaya] Toure, [David] Silva and [Kevin] De Bruyne in midfield are super players, but winning back the ball is not their best quality. It's a risky team selection, Guardiola accepts that, but it means they have to have the ball.

"They're a team that's not at ease when you press them. I think the competition for places among the goalkeepers means Willy Caballero isn't calm. There too, Guardiola wants to bring the ball out cleanly from the back come what may, but you sense that it's possible to intercept by pressing them in their half of the pitch."

Puel added: "I see Monaco going through. A two-goal deficit isn't as big as all that for them. It's really doable."
