French youth academies should adapt to avoid injuries - Leonardo Jardim

Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim has expressed his surprise at the number of injuries suffered by young French players and suggested a change in youth academies is required.

Jardim is currently without Geoffrey Kondogbia, 21, and Tiemoue Bakayoko, 20, due to thigh injuries while Layvin Kurzawa, 22, has only recently returned from a similar problem.

The 40-year-old coach, who took over at the Stade Louis II last summer after spells in his native Portugal and Greece, has helped last season's Ligue 1 runners-up recover from a slow start to sit fifth in the French top flight.

He told reporters he might have done better still had he been able to call on his full squad.

"Normally, it's the older players who get injured easily," the former Sporting Lisbon and Olympiacos boss said. "Everywhere I have gone it has been like that. But here in France, a lot of young players suffer muscle injuries.

"It's also the case in the reserve team or with the under-19s. And all over France. It's not normal. Perhaps the physical work in the youth academies is not adapted to the physical development and morphology of young players."
