Arsenal ease Laurent Koscielny injury setback fears as first-team return nears

Arsenal have dismissed fears that captain Laurent Koscielny suffered an injury setback during an appearance for the under-21s on Tuesday, saying he had come through "without complications."

Koscielny, stepping up his recovery from a torn Achilles tendon, played 85 minutes of the 2-1 Checkatrade Trophy loss at Portsmouth before limping off.

It was Koscielny's second appearance of the season after 45 minutes for the U23s last week.

However, coach Freddie Ljungberg told the Islington Gazette that the centre-back had been suffering only from cramp, with Arsenal confirming on Wednesday that he was not injured.

"Laurent Koscielny continued his rehabilitation on Tuesday with an appearance for our U21s in a Checkatrade Trophy game at Portsmouth," a statement said.

"We lost 2-1, but Laurent completed 85 minutes and has come through the game without complications."

Arsenal said he will not be in the squad for Wednesday's match against Manchester United at Old Trafford, but will be assessed ahead of Saturday's home game against Huddersfield.
