Ex-Arsenal star Freddie Ljungberg can succeed as a coach - Lars Lagerback

Former Sweden coach Lars Lagerback has told Swedish website Fotbollskanalen he believes Freddie Ljungberg will succeed in management after leaving Arsenal's academy to become an assistant coach at Wolfsburg.

Ljungberg had been coaching the under-15s this season but switched to Wolfsburg when Arsenal's academy chief Andries Jonker took over as head coach.

Lagerback, who coached Sweden for most of Ljungberg's international career, said: "He is completing his pro-level education now and, with the experience he has, I think he has every possibility to become a good coach.

"First of all he has a very good footballing intellect and a very good understanding of the game, and that's one of the basic requirements."

Lagerback led rank outsiders Iceland to the quarterfinals at Euro 2016, eliminating England along the way, and is now in charge of Norway's national team.

He added that during his time as coach of Sweden between 2000 and 2009 Ljungberg had shown "a very good understanding of what's important in football and how a team should play."

He added: "He's been working at Arsenal for a year now, so he's had a taste of it [coaching].

"I think it's a great start to begin as an assistant when you go to a top club right away like that."

Kim Kallstrom, who played in Sweden's midfield with Ljungberg for several years, said he had been surprised by the move.

"You didn't see that coming, but at the same time it's great for him," he said. "It feels like he's really taken to the coaching profession lately.

"It's a special job -- I don't think you will automatically be a good coach just because you were a good football player.

"You have to be humble because it's a totally different type of profession."
