Gabriel Paulista: Arsenal must learn from 'basic mistakes' of recent defeats

Arsenal defender Gabriel Paulista says the team's recent losses to Everton and Manchester City were the result of "basic mistakes" and called on his teammates to hold each other accountable.

Arsenal's Premier League title challenge took a major blow when they surrendered 1-0 leads at both Goodison Park and the Etihad Stadium last week to lose 2-1 and fall nine points behind leaders Chelsea.

"We lost both games on reversals [losing from a winning position], with basic mistakes," Gabriel told Arsenal's official website. "This cannot happen. I think each of us needs to reflect and try to keep each other in check. We must know how to demand from each other, and how to respect each other."

Gabriel has been filling in for injured centre-back Shkodran Mustafi, whose absence has been keenly felt by the Gunners.

Arsenal are undefeated with Mustafi in their starting lineup, but have lost three of the five league games they have played without him this season.

"We were coming from a good string of games, and met Everton feeling totally confident that we would win the match. We did start out winning, but ended up suffering a comeback -- once again," Gabriel said. "We conceded two goals, which is something that just can't happen to a team as big as ours. And it wasn't different on Sunday.

"We started out winning and ended up losing on a comeback. I think now is a good time for the team to stop and think about the mistakes we've made in these two games to try and improve on that."
