Alexis Sanchez's Barcelona home seized by Spain tax office - report

Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez has had his flat in Barcelona seized as part of an ongoing investigation by Spanish authorities into the player's alleged tax evasion, according to Spanish daily El Mundo Deportivo.

The Chile international has been accused of "actively withholding" taxes during his three seasons at Barcelona before moving to Arsenal in July 2014 and has a total debt of €3.7 million (£3.1m, $3.86m) with the Spanish Treasury.

The Barcelona-based publication claimed on Friday that the tax office as of Dec. 15 has taken possession of Sanchez's penthouse in Catalan city.

Sanchez is being accused of using a tax haven in Malta to divert his earnings from image rights during his time at Barcelona and could face several counts of tax fraud.

ESPN contacted Spain's Tax Office but they were unavailable to comment.

The 27-year-old's agent Fernando Felicevich denied any wrongdoing last month and said in a statement published in the Chilean media: "Alexis Sanchez has fully complied with each and every law in all the countries he has resided in, so he has paid all the taxes to the relevant local authorities.

"Likewise, all his personal income and the ones related to his image rights have been declared to the different national authorities."

Sanchez is the sixth player to have been on the books of Barcelona with tax issues in the Spanish courts.

Earlier this summer, Barca star Lionel Messi was found guilty of three counts of tax fraud. The Argentina captain was fined and handed a suspended 21-month prison sentence. Messi's Argentinian and Barca teammate, Javier Mascherano, entered a guilty plea for concealing part of what he earned from image rights and was fined and given a one-year prison sentence that was also suspended.

Barcelona's Brazilian forward Neymar has an open case against him regarding alleged tax evasion in Spain as do former Brazilian defender Adriano and Cameroon star Samuel Eto'o, who played for Barca from 2004 and 2009 and is currently with Turkish side Antalyaspor.

Adriano left Barca after six seasons at the club to join Besiktas this summer.
