Arsenal's Olivier Giroud: Norwich assist is good for my confidence

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has acknowledged he needs to get his confidence back following a long scoring drought in the Premier League.

Giroud, 29, has not scored a league goal since his brace against Liverpool on Jan. 13, but has still started the last three games for Arsenal with Arsene Wenger sticking with him up front.

The France international did, however, set up Danny Welbeck for the Gunners' winner in the 1-0 victory over Norwich on Saturday, and said that assist will boost his confidence going forward.

"I try to play with my first instinct and be efficient, but even if I didn't score I'm pleased with that assist and I will try to keep working," Giroud told Arsenal's official website.

"I will work hard to get the confidence back and the goals as well. It is always nice for a striker to score or assist a teammate. I'm pleased to be back, not on the scoresheet but on the assist sheet."

Giroud now has just two more games to end his scoring drought before the end of the season, including next weekend's visit to Manchester City.

That match could decide which team finishes third and qualifies directly for the Champions League next season, while Giroud has not given up hope of catching second-placed Tottenham either.

"We want to finish second or third, we don't want to play the playoff for the Champions League in August," he said. "So we need to win these last two games. It has been a long and tough season, but we are nearly at the end and we want to finish well, even though it would have been better to finish even higher."

To beat City, though, Arsenal will likely need a better performance than they managed against Norwich, when they dominated possession but struggled to create many scoring chances.

"We are very pleased with the three points because it was not a fantastic game from the team," Giroud said. "We could have scored more, and we played a team who are fighting to not go down.

"We knew it was going to be a tough game and we expected that. We are very pleased to win this game because it was not easy but we have to do much better."
