Arsenal under-17s win ABN AMRO Future Cup against Anderlecht

Arsenal became the first English team to win the under-17 ABN AMRO Future Cup after beating Belgian side Anderlecht in a penalty shootout in the final.

After a 0-0 draw, Arsenal goalkeeper Joao Virginia made three saves in the shootout and Emile Smith Rowe converted the decisive penalty to give the young Gunners a 5-4 win.

Virginia also made two saves in a shootout against Barcelona in the semifinals following another 0-0 draw.

The eight-team friendly tournament has been organised over the Easter weekend each year by host Ajax since it was founded in 2010.

Ajax and Anderlecht had won three titles each in the six previous editions, and this was the first year that the Dutch club didn't make the final.

Liverpool and Manchester United have both lost in the final to Ajax in previous years.

Arsenal beat Ajax in the group stage this year, along with wins over Red Bull Salzburg and Right to Dream from Ghana.
