Arsene Wenger has criticised Stoke fans for their chants toward Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey during the teams' 0-0 draw at the Britannia Stadium on Sunday.
Ramsey broke his leg at the Britannia in 2010 after a tackle by Ryan Shawcross, an incident that drew the fury of Wenger and still rankles supporters on both sides. During Sunday's Premier League game, some Stoke fans booed Ramsey every time he touched the ball and chanted "Aaron Ramsey, he walks with a limp."
Wenger was also the subject of abuse by the fans, who have not forgotten his comments in 2011 that compared Stoke to a rugby team.
Wenger said he tried to ignore the abuse during the game, but said the supporters displayed a mob mentality in making the chants.
"I shut my ears and that is the best way to deal with it. I don't know what to do about it and I have no influence over it. I don't really know what they should do about it," Wenger said.
"When they [fans] get together sometimes they forget that individual responsibility. Maybe when you go home and watch it on television, you will be less proud."
Ramsey needed surgery and a lengthy layoff to return from the injury, and has refused to accept an apology from Shawcross over the tackle.
Wenger said after Sunday's game that Stoke had reverted back to a more physical style than he had expected, but his counterpart Mark Hughes disputed that claim.
"Arsene says he was surprised that we went direct. I'm not sure what game he's been watching," Hughes said. "I was delighted with our performance. I don't know why the physical aspect of the game has to be mentioned."
