Calum Chambers plays in defensive midfield for Arsenal U21s

Arsenal could turn to Calum Chambers to aid their injury crisis after he was used in a defensive midfield role for Arsenal's under-21 side on Monday night.

Chambers, 20, has been used as a right-back and centre-back since arriving at the club from Southampton for £16 million in the summer of 2014.

Manager Arsene Wenger views the England international as a central defender, but with injuries to Francis Coquelin, Santi Cazorla and club captain Mikel Arteta, Chambers could get a chance in midfield and was tested out in that position as Steve Gatting's U21s beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1.

"I think it was good for Calum to get 90 minutes under his belt and for such a young lad he has got a lot of experience and tonight I thought he was excellent," Gatting told the club website.

"The boss has seen him play several positions and it is handy for the first team to have a player like Calum. He can perhaps play in central defence, at right-back and in midfield and he gives the boss options and that is good for Calum to play in different options."

French midfielder Coquelin is out for 12 weeks after suffering a knee ligament injury against West Brom, while 31-year-old Mathieu Flamini has started both games since his compatriot was injured.
