Arsenal duo Mesut Ozil, Santi Cazorla rated Europe's best midfielders - CIES

Arsenal's Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil are Europe's top defensive and attacking midfielders so far this season, according to a CIES Football Observatory report.

CIES released a list on Tuesday of the best-performing players from Europe's top five leagues for the 2015-16 season, with Spain international Cazorla rated as the top defensive midfielder and Germany's Ozil the highest-ranked attacking midfielder.

The Gunners duo rated far higher than their respective rivals, with Cazorla's nearest challenger -- Paris Saint Germain's Marco Verratti -- scoring 75 percent of the Spain international's 100 percent rating; Bordeaux's Wahbi Khazri was the closest attacking midfielder to Ozil at 73 percent of the World Cup winner.

Ozil has created nine goals and scored another in 10 Premier League appearances for Arsenal, while Cazorla has impressed in a deeper role with three assists as Arsene Wenger's side sit behind table toppers Manchester City on goal difference.

Between them, the pair have created as many chances in the league -- 81 -- as the whole of Manchester United's squad.

Cazorla was joined in the defensive midfield category by Gunners teammate Francis Coquelin (seventh) and Man City's Yaya Toure (fifth).

Meanwhile, Ozil was ahead of City's Kevin De Bruyne (third), West Ham star Dimitri Payet (seventh) and Norwich's Wes Hoolahan (eighth).

City centre-back Nicolas Otamendi took top spot in the centre-back category, with the Gunners' Laurent Koscielny and Liverpool's Mamadou Sakho close behind the Argentina international with 98 percent of his rating.

Leicester City's Riyad Mahrez outperformed Barcelona star Neymar in the forward section as he took second spot ahead of the Brazil captain, but Robert Lewandowski took first place after a stunning goal-scoring run for Bayern Munich.

Everton's Arouna Kone took fourth place in the forwards' table, ahead of City's Sergio Aguero (fifth), Erik Lamela (seventh) and Barca's Luis Suarez (eighth).

PSG defender Serge Aurier took top spot in the full-backs' list, ahead of Atletico Madrid's Filipe Luis (second) -- formerly of Chelsea -- and Bayern's Rafinha (third).

CIES' rankings are determined by six key performance indicators: shooting, recovery (intercepting), distribution, take-ons, chance creation and rigour (minimising chances for opponents through duelling).

Only players fielded for at least 60 percent of domestic league minutes are included in the rankings.
