U.S. under-20 midfielder Gedion Zelalem eyes Arsenal breakthrough

Gedoin Zelalem is pictured in club action last season.

Arsenal's United States under-20 international Gedion Zelalem has said his aim is to break into the Gunners' first team next season.

The midfielder, speaking after his international side had bowed out of the Under-20 World Cup on penalties to Serbia at the quarterfinal stage, told FIFA's official website he was aiming high.

"I'm going to go back for preseason and try to get into the first team and play some games," he explained.

"If I can do that, great. If not, I'll look to get out on loan somewhere.

"It's a dream come true to be at a club like Arsenal, and I want to get into the first team this season, play minutes and start matches.

"I have high expectations of myself and if I was to be starting week in, week out, I wouldn't be surprised."

Zelalem, however, said he had been left frustrated by the U.S. defeat and that he and his teammates wanted to be "reaching finals and winning tournaments."

He said football in the United States was "getting bigger and better all the time."

"How much potential do we have? A lot," he added. "I think at the next World Cup you could see us do really well.

"I think there's a few guys in this squad, myself included, who could be in the senior squad for the next World Cup -- and that has to be our aim."
