Ian Wright: Arsenal aim to win Barclays Asia Trophy in Singapore

Arsenal will go all out to win July's Barclays Asia Trophy in Singapore to build on a successful year, according to club legend Ian Wright.

Wright, who won five major trophies with Arsenal and bagged 128 goals in 221 appearances, was at Tuesday's launch for the four team event.

The Gunners will be joined by Stoke City, Everton and a Singapore Selection side on Jul. 15 and 18, with the event being held in the Lion City for the first time.

The biennial competition began in 2003 in Malaysia and has also been staged in Thailand (2005), Beijing (2009) and Hong Kong (2007, 2011 and 2013).

"It's a tournament that I am sure Arsenal will be looking to win." Wright said.

"The way Arsenal played this season has been very good and very positive. We could finish second in the league, win the FA Cup [they face Aston Villa in the final on May 30] and hopefully sign a few players to coincide with coming out here to Singapore.

"I'm really quite excited about the tournament and it is exciting for our Asian fans. We have some top players at the club and it will be great for our fans in Asia, where we have a good following."

At the media conference held at the floating platform in the Singapore cityhub on Tuesday, Wright was joined by ex-Everton and Chelsea midfielder Graham Stuart and Stoke's Malian forward Mamady Sidibe.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez is likely to make full use of the friendly matches in Singapore to fine tune his squad after a "slightly disappointing season", according to Stuart.

"It is a magnificent opportunity for us to come out here to Singapore and play against quality opposition and it isn't just a pre-season travel," said Stuart, who scored 22 goals for the Toffees.

"We have some of the best young talents in the English game at the moment in John Stones and Ross Barkley. So this is a great opportunity to show our fans in Asia what they are all about and put on a good show."

Former Malian international Sidibe was with the Potters from 2005 to 2013 and netted 24 goals in his forward role. He was full of praise for Mark Hughes' achievements this season which see the club are on course a top half finish with two games left to play.

"We (Stoke City) will come here to win." said Sidibe. "We have done very well this year under the guidance of Mark Hughes and we are trying to push on, bringing in different players and the style has changed a bit. We are playing better football and players like Bojan [Krkic] and [Peter] Crouch have done well. So I'm sure we will come here confident of a good display."

The Barclays Asia Trophy will see Everton take on Stoke on Jul. 15 while Arsenal are up against a Singapore Select XI coached by the legendary V. Sundramoorthy on the same day. The final and the third place playoff game take place three days later.

And if there was any question whether the three Premier League teams would be taking things lightly in the sweltering heat of Singapore, Stuart was quick to put an end to those doubts with games to be held at the recently constructed National Stadium that hold up to 55,000 fans.

The 44-year-old declared: "Once you cross the white line, you forget its pre-season and you aim for something... We know what Premier League football is like, you can't ease your way into the action and you got to go at it from the first minute. So to do it here in pre-season will be ideal preparation for what we hope will be a successful season ahead."
