Arsene Wenger highlights Alexis Sanchez performance at Sunderland

Arsene Wenger was relieved Arsenal returned to winning ways as they beat Sunderland 2-0 in the Premier League and he reserved particular praise for match-winner Alexis Sanchez.

Sanchez scored twice for the Gunners at the Stadium of Light to ensure the club claimed a first victory in four league matches.

Wenger was pleased with how the Chile international played and also expressed his hope the result will help his team's form improve in the coming weeks.

"His transition from defence to offence is very quick," Wenger said in his postmatch news conference, according to Arsenal's Twitter account. "Sunderland were keen to defend well today. We have all gone through big defeats but confidence will come back slowly.

"We were focused today. Maybe we missed some opportunities but we are very happy to get the three points."

Wenger was also asked about the fitness of Theo Walcott, who was an unused substitute as he closes in on his comeback from a nine-month injury absence.

The Frenchman added: "He's fit but he lacks competition and contact in the Premier League. There's no problem with his fitness."
