Danny Welbeck 'disappointed' with North London derby performance

Danny Welbeck admits he is "disappointed" with his performance in his first North London derby as Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw by Tottenham at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Arsene Wenger's side were forced to battle back for a point after Mauricio Pochettino's team had gone ahead through Nacer Chadli 10 minutes into the second half, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain netting the equaliser with 16 minutes left.

The draw leaves the Gunners six points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea after six games, and Welbeck says the hosts should have made the most of their chances against their fierce rivals.

"[Our performance] could have been better," he told the club's official website. "We really controlled the game, we had a lot more chances and they got one shot in the second half and it went in so we're a bit disappointed with that. It's disappointing to draw the game.

"We tried to play out from the back and got caught in possession. Credit to them, they counter-attacked from there but it's difficult to take because we were in control of the game. It could have gone better.

"In the first half I was more of a threat, in the second I didn't really feel like I did as much as I should have. I am a bit disappointed with that and I will work on the training pitch with the rest of the players and hopefully be involved much more throughout our games."

Injuries forced Arsenal midfield trio Mikel Arteta, Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey off the field during the derby -- a situation which has left Wenger baffled -- and Welbeck says the enforced changes hampered the Gunners' ability to create chances as the game wore on.

"It is difficult because we set out as a team knowing what we wanted to do and with the injuries coming into play, it changed everything for us and made it difficult," he said. "We would have preferred to make those substitutions later on in the game.

The former Manchester United striker is no stranger to local derbies having played against Manchester City for the Red Devils and also featuring in the Tyne-Wear derby against Newcastle while on loan for Sunderland, and while Spurs took a point from the Emirates, the 23-year-old is pleased with his start to life in London.

"I have played in quite a few [Manchester] derbies and I played for Sunderland against Newcastle as well, so it is nothing new to me," he added. "I know what it means to the fans and the whole club. I really wanted to get the three points so I'm a bit unhappy.

"[My start] has been very welcoming from the fans, the whole club and everyone involved with Arsenal and it is a great honour for me to be here. I am just looking forward to improving here and to making sure I give the best I can for Arsenal."
