Jack Wilshere set to be fit for Arsenal trip to Aston Villa

Jack Wilshere should be fit to start for Arsenal when they travel to Aston Villa on Saturday, Arsene Wenger has said.

Wenger expressed his concerns about Wilshere's fitness after he received a knock to his ankle in Tuesday's Champions League defeat to Borussia Dortmund, with the 22-year-old having suffered a string of ankle issues in the past.

The Arsenal boss had told the media after the game that he had hurt his right ankle, but on Friday he clarified the situation.

"He's available," he said. "I was wrong [after the Dortmund game] -- it was his left ankle and it was only a click that made him turn his ankle a bit, so he's all right."

Wenger also said a decision would soon be made on whether full-back Mathieu Debuchy is to undergo surgery.

The player announced on social media this week that he may require an operation on a "broken" ankle ligament and Wenger confirmed: "He has an exploration of his ankle on Friday night and they go in and look how the ligament is damaged.

"After that we [will] know if he does need surgery. If he doesn't, it'll be six weeks. If he does need surgery it'll be three months. At the moment we don't know."

Calum Chambers and Mathieu Flamini are set to return to return for the trip to Villa after missing the Dortmund game.

Wenger went on to suggest he is still trying to find a balance in his team after his summer captures of Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck.

"It's difficult for me to explain all the tactical changes but not a lot has changed," he continued. "We failed in some big games last year and behind that is the thinking that we have to be more solid in some games. We conceded too many goals in the big games last year.

"We have to find a balance. I added a striker with Sanchez. We have another striker with Welbeck. We have a lot of offensive players, with [Mesut] Ozil, Wilshere and [Aaron] Ramsey -- and even [Mikel] Arteta when he plays is initially an offensive player.

"To find the balance we have as well to defend and I think we have to find a balance between attacking and defending. That's why it's not an easy subject."

Wenger hopes his team are ready to respond to the criticism that followed their performance in Dortmund when they take on second-placed Villa on Saturday, as they go in search of their first away win of the season.

"We want to respond. We had a disappointing performance more than a defeat," he added. "I think what was important is that we came out of Saturday's game feeling that we had a very good performance and on Tuesday night we didn't, so it's important we come back.

"We have confidence in our strengths and we want to show that we can perform in the game that is important on Saturday.

"Villa are dangerous. I remember they came to the Emirates last year and they played very well and beat us. He's a guy [Villa boss Paul Lambert] who has a big experience now and he's starting to build a very solid team."
