Arsene Wenger: Jack Wilshere found consistent level for 90 minutes

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger hailed the performance of Jack Wilshere in his side's 2-2 draw against Manchester City.

Wilshere's second half goal brought Arsenal back into a game that was drifting away from them after Sergio Aguero's opener for City, with Wenger delighted by the display of a midfielder who has been the subject of criticism in recent weeks.

"He's coming back physically to his level where he can be," said Wenger of his England midfielder. "Unfortunately it takes time to find that fraction of a second where you feel you can make a difference and it's so important in the modern game to get away from people when you win the ball.

"It looks like today was the first time he found it on a consistent level through the 90 minutes."

Wenger declared himself satisfied with his side's performance against the Premier League champions, even though he was disappointed not to get the win.

"I think we produced a game of top quality," he said. "It was a game of top quality between two very good teams, played at tremendous pace, especially in the first half.

"We were unlucky to be 1-0 down in the first half and we did something remarkable to come back and be in a leading position. The only frustrating thing for me is that we didn't manage to keep the lead and gave a cheap goal away.

"That's where we have room for improvement because it was a very encouraging game but the way we conceded the second goal nearly killed our game because we could have lost afterwards -- it was just a mental blow. But overall I think it was a top quality game."

Meanwhile, Arsenal goalscorer Wilshere suggested he was satisfied with a point, and suggested fatigue was a factor in the Gunners' failure to hang onto their 2-1 advantage in the closing stages.

"I think it was a fair result," he told BT Sport. "We started well in the first half and we could have got a few goals. They are a great team and they came back into it. All Aguero needs is one chance and he proved that.

"We showed great character to come from 1-0 down. They are champions for a reason, they showed that. Once we get 2-1 up, we did well to come back. We are happy with a point."
