La Volpe out as Club America coach after failing to reach playoffs

Ricardo La Volpe is no longer coach of Club America, with the Argentine announcing his departure the day after Las Aguilas failed to reach the 2017 Clausura playoffs.

Club America needed a draw to guarantee a postseason spot, but fell 3-2 to Pachuca on Saturday evening. Morelia then snuck into the final playoff position thanks to Raul Ruidaz's late goal in its 2-1 win over Monterrey, which both secured a liguilla place and helped the team avoid relegation.

"The most important thing is having been at America," said La Volpe as he exited the team's training facility. "We had a very good [2016 Apertura] championship, reaching the final. In the [2017 Clausura] we didn't achieve the objective that we needed to."

The former Mexico national team coach lamented his team's inability to pick up a single point in any of its last three matches and extend Las Aguilas run of consecutive playoffs to 11.

La Volpe's departure follows quickly after that of Club America's sporting president Ricardo Pelaez, who left the club on April 28 after a successful five-and-a-half year stint.

There has been a wave of rumors that Miguel "Piojo" Herrera will return to Club America to replace La Volpe. Herrera guided Club Tijuana to a first position finish in the regular season, but his contract comes to an end after the Clausura is over
