Alaves appoint Abelardo Fernandez as third manager of season

Alaves have appointed their former player Abelardo Fernandez as their third coach of the season.

The 47-year-old replaces Italian Gianni De Biasi, who was sacked earlier this week after barely two months in charge.

He replaced Luis Zubeldia in September.

Abelardo takes over a side who have picked up just six points from 12 La Liga games this season, leaving them rooted to the foot of the table and already six points adrift of safety.

A club statement read: "Alaves have completed the appointment of Abelardo Fernandez as the club's new coach. The coach returns to the club after his spell as a player.

"He has experience of being at clubs with the aim of staying up and takes charge until the end of the season."

Former Spain defender Abelardo represented Alaves during the 2002-03 season at the end of his playing career, having previously spent eight years with Barcelona and five years with hometown side Sporting Gijon.

Sporting are also the club he has spent most of his coaching career with, including a spell as head coach between 2014 and 2017.

Javier Cabello took charge of the team on Thursday night as they beat Getafe 3-0 in the Copa del Rey.

Alaves go to Girona in La Liga on Monday.
