Johan Cruyff quits advisory role at Ajax, says he was ignored

Former Ajax star Johan Cruyff has quit as an adviser at the Amsterdam club after claiming his views were being ignored.

The 68-year-old, who won eight Eredivisie titles and three European Cups with the Dutch giants, has held the post for five years but announced in a newspaper column for De Telegraaf his decision to step down.

The three-time Ballon d'Or winner, who was diagnosed with lung cancer last month, was tasked with developing youth production at the club.

However, last week's removal of former Netherlands international Wim Jonk as Ajax's head of youth development appears to have been the final straw for Cruyff.

"I quit," he wrote in De Telegraaf. "For years I have noticed that the core of my vision within Ajax hasn't been followed up.

"In addition, I increasingly got the feeling that this has been done deliberately, and I do not play games.

"Of course this feels like a raw deal. I'm just a director and I had high hopes that the whole thing would be in good hands with a few experienced drivers.

"Those in charge at Ajax must sit together and look first at themselves (and) make sure it will be fine, but it will not happen under the umbrella of the Cruyff-plan, because my name will not be there any more."

For Cruyff it is a bitter split with a club where he won eight domestic titles and three European Cups from 1964-73, and then managed from 1985-88.
