Ghana advance to ANC quarterfinals as Egypt steal late win over Uganda

Asamoah Gyan became Ghana's all-time top scorer in the African Nations Cup as the Black Stars edged Mali 1-0 in Port-Gentil to book their place in the quarterfinals.

The 31-year-old headed home from a Jordan Ayew corner in the 21st minute to take his tournament tally to eight and eclipse previous record holder Osei Kofi.

It gave Ghana their second straight win in Group D, having started their campaign with victory over Uganda last week.

Mali had gone into the game needing a win after their opening goalless draw against Egypt, and came up short after substitute Kalifa Coulibaly sent a header agonisingly across the face of the six-yard box.

In the other game in Group D, Egypt substitute Abdallah El Said struck an 89th-minute winner to seal a 1-0 victory over Uganda.

El Said's effort means his team will head into Wednesday's final Group D clash with already-qualified Ghana needing just a point to progress, while Uganda are eliminated.

Uganda seldom posed much of a threat to the Egyptian defence but they were coping well at the back and restricting the favourites to few clear chances in front of goal.

But as the minutes ticked by Egypt managed to apply more pressure and El Said pounced on the counter-attack to sweep the winner past keeper Denis Onyango.
