Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang wants to follow in footsteps of Drogba, Eto'o

Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang says he has taken inspiration from fellow African Footballer of the Year award winners Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto'o.

Aubameyang, 26, picked up the honour for the first time last month after finding the net over 40 times for Dortmund and Gabon in 2015.

The former St Etienne player, meanwhile, scored his 20th Bundesliga goal of the season in Dortmund's 2-0 victory over Ingolstadt at the weekend. That prompted him to set his sights on matching Germany legend Gerd Muller's Bundesliga record of 40 goals in a single campaign.

Speaking to RMC on Monday, Aubameyang said he has always looked up to Montreal Impact striker Drogba and Antalyaspor attacker Eto'o.

"They're two big brothers who made history in Africa," Aubameyang told RMC. "You try to follow in their footsteps -- to be inspired by them.

"Didier Drogba sent me a message not so long ago and I told him that I still watched his DVDs a few years ago. They're two great forwards who had a big impact on me and brought a lot to me.

"Samuel Eto'o I know well. We see each other often, we send each other messages and we call each other. It's good. It makes you want to do what they did."

Drogba, the Ivory Coast's record goal scorer, won the African Footballer of the Year award in 2006 and 2009. He scored 167 goals in two spells at Chelsea and helped the club win the Champions League, four Premier League titles and seven other major domestic trophies.

Eto'o's goals saw him go all the way in the Champions League three times with Barcelona and Inter Milan, and twice in the African Nations Cup with Cameroon. He was also named Africa's best player four times between 2003 and 2010.
