South Africa unlikely to host African Nations Cup should Morocco bow out

JOHANNESBURG -- South Africa is reluctant to step in as a last-minute host for next year's African Nations Cup, citing fears over Ebola and the unplanned cost of holding the event.

In a statement Friday, the South African sports ministry says "there are just too many factors to consider for South Africa."

The ministry hasn't yet been officially asked by the South African Football Association to consider hosting the tournament, but says Ebola is a concern.

SAFA has been approached by the Confederation of African Football to be on standby after initial host Morocco requested postponement of Africa's top football tournament because of Ebola concerns. The event is set for Jan. 17-Feb. 8.

CAF insists it must go ahead on those dates or it will find another country.
