Man City's Yaya Toure retires from international football with Ivory Coast

The guys answer your tweets about Liverpool as true contenders, if Everton can pull a Leicester, and Man City's UCL hopes.

Yaya Toure has announced his international retirement from Ivory Coast duty after a 12-year career in which he won 102 caps.

Toure, 33, was the captain of his national team and led the country to their second-ever African Nations Cup title in 2015.

The Manchester City midfielder was expected to skipper the team in Gabon in January as he began the defence of their crown, but he has instead chosen to quit international football.

He said on his official website: "Writing this note was probably 'the...

Cameroon's Joel Matip to miss African Nations Cup to focus on Liverpool

Joel Matip has revealed that he intends to miss the African Nations Cup with Cameroon in order to focus on the start of his Liverpool career.

Matip, who joined Liverpool in the summer on a free transfer from Bundesliga side Schalke, has not played for his country in over a year but is available for selection at the competition in Gabon between Jan. 14 and Feb. 5.

Cameroon manager Hugo Broos recently expressed his disappointment after the defender did not accept a call-up. But Matip does not want...

Le Roy's historic triumph with Togo latest in series of wins on the continent

Claude Le Roy's Togo advanced to the African Nations Cup finals with a 5-0 win over Djibouti.

Togo national team manager Claude Le Roy could not celebrate his team's legendary 5-0 victory over Djibouti in African Nations Cup qualifying at the weekend. His ankle was too sore. He had been kicked, inadvertently, by one of the opposing players as both scrambled for a loose ball that had run into touch.

But if he had been able, the affable Frenchman would surely have danced a little jig. He had taken his new team Togo from a virtually impossible qualifying position to snatching the last available...

Tottenham's Victor Wanyama available in January after Kenya miss ANC

The ESPN FC crew answer your tweets about Tottenham's slow start, breakout players in La Liga and Chelsea's title hopes.

Tottenham will not lose Victor Wanyama to the African Cup of Nations in January after Kenya failed to qualify for the tournament.

Kenya were held to a 1-1 draw in Zambia on Sunday, with Wanyama -- who has started Spurs' first three matches of the season -- assisting Ayub Timbe's 63rd-minute goal.

But Rainford Kalaba equalised six minutes from time, leaving Kenya bottom of Group E.

Next year's tournament in Gabon runs from Jan. 14 to Feb. 5, meaning Wanyama could have missed over a month of the season...

Ivory Coast scare as Sierra Leone push them close in AFCON qualifying

Ivory Coast drew 1-1 with Sierra Leone on Saturday to clinch an African Nations Cup berth for 2017.

Having clinched a place at the 2017 tournament over the weekend, African Nations Cup holders Ivory Coast can thank their lucky stars that goal line technology has yet to be introduced to the African continent.

Ivory Coast booked their place with a 1-1 draw against Sierra Leone but the match was not without its controversy. Local television conveniently showed no slow-motion replays but on initial viewing, there was every chance that Leone's Kei Kamara might have scored with the last touch of their...
