Sergi Guardiola leaves Adelaide United with Real Murcia a likely destination

Sergi Guardiola's failed A-League stint has ended with the striker leaving Adelaide United to return to Spain.

Guardiola, who scored just three goals in 16 games for the struggling defending champions, flew out of Adelaide on Wednesday night.

The 25-year-old had been on loan to the A-League club from Spain's Granada but is reportedly heading back home to join Spanish second division outfit Real Murcia.

Guardiola's form dipped to the extent he was relegated to the bench for Adelaide's past two games.

"Sergi came to the club with a good reputation and a very strong work ethic," Adelaide coach Guillermo Amor said in a statement.

"He has continued to work hard this season, but he and the club have made this decision in the best interest of both of us."

The Reds added that forward Eli Babalj is training with the club and may rejoin them after previously making five appearances while on loan from Dutch club AZ Alkmaar.

The ninth-placed Reds are winners just twice this season and have scored only 12 goals -- the fewest of any A-League side -- ahead of their home fixture on Sunday against the Wellington Phoenix.
