Vincenzo Montella dedicates AC Milan victory to Silvio Berlusconi

AC Milan coach Vincenzo Montella says the team's 2-1 win against Fiorentina in Serie A was "a gift" to departing club president Silvio Berlusconi.

Berlusconi was at the San Siro Stadium on Sunday in what could be his final home match before the takeover of the club by Chinese investors is complete next month.

"I don't know if it's the last game, but on behalf of the squad I dedicate this victory to president Berlusconi and the director," Montella told Mediaset Premium.

"I can only say that the world of football owes a great deal to Berlusconi. His Milan was the most successful Italian club and known all over the world.

"I don't know what will happen, but I do know we must thank the president, his ideas and his history."

Former Barcelona winger Gerard Deulofeu scored what turned out to be Milan's winning goal in the 31st minute after Fiorentina's Nikola Kalinic had replied to Juraj Kucka's opening header in the opening 20 minutes.

Milan's second victory in their last seven matches leaves them in seventh position, four points behind Atalanta, who occupy the final Europa League spot.

Montella added that he was hopeful of earning the right to play in Europe next season.

"It's a victory that fills us with pride and keeps us in the running for Europe," he said. "In the head-to-head clashes, we now have the advantage against both Lazio and Fiorentina, while we still have to play Inter and Atalanta again.

"This is a deserved success, as we created more scoring opportunities than they did. We could've finished it off in the first half. In the second, it's true that Fiorentina forced us to go deep, but I don't remember a real shot on target from them."

Fiorentina will play Borussia Monchengladbach in the second leg of their Round of 16 Europa League tie on Thursday.

Milan's next match is in Serie A next Sunday when they travel to face Sassuolo.
