AC Milan boss Sinisa Mihajlovic refuses to quit after Napoli loss

AC Milan coach Sinisa Mihajlovic has ruled out resigning from his role after seeing his side fall to a 4-0 Serie A defeat at home to Napoli on Sunday.

Milan are currently sitting in 11th position in the table with nine points from seven games -- five points worse off than they were at the same stage of last season under Filippo Inzaghi,

Only Carpi have conceded more than the 13 goals the Rossoneri have shipped so far this term, yet Mihajlovic has vowed to fight on.

"The word 'resign' does not exist in my vocabulary," he is quoted as saying by Gazzetta dello Sport. "I'm never going to do that. I have my dignity and my pride.

"I always try to give my best, then it's up to the club what they want to do. I'm ready to explain everything to [club president Silvio] Berlusconi. I'll continue trying to do my best, like I always have and always will do."

The Milan fans expressed their frustration at the San Siro on Sunday, although general manager Adriano Galliani was the target rather than Mihajlovic.

"I've not spoken to him [Galliani] yet," Mihajlovic said. "I'm sorry -- sorry also for the players because it was a horrible, yet deserved defeat. We need to work hard, clearly harder than we have been working."

Mihajlovic continues to enjoy the support of the Milan fans, who this time used irony in their criticism of Galliani by thanking him for doing an excellent job in the transfer market in the summer.

The players were also targeted by disgruntled fans, who ordered them to "get to work," before deserting the stadium as soon as Rodrigo Ely scored an own goal to make it 4-0 in the 77th minute. By that stage, Galliani had long since left his seat in the stands.

He has been made the scapegoat for Milan's problems over the past three years, offering to resign just under two years ago, only to be convinced to stay by Berlusconi.

Since then, Milan have finished eighth and 10th in Serie A, missing out on Europe for two consecutive years.

Mihajlovic had set the target of a top-three finish for his side this season after arriving from Sampdoria in the summer, but he knows his players need to work hard if they want achieve such an ambition.

"Napoli's forwards and our defence made the difference tonight," Mihajlovic said. "They were better than us, there's not much else to say. We're not attacking well and we're not defending well, we're just doing something in between."
