AC Milan appoint Sinisa Mihajlovic after sacking Filippo Inzaghi

AC Milan have finally confirmed the appointment of Sinisa Mihajlovic after dismissing Filippo Inzaghi.

Former Sampdoria boss Mihajlovic has signed a contract until June 2017.

The ANSA news agency had reported on June 4 that Inzaghi had been dismissed and was to be replaced by Mihajlovic, but the club only announced the news on Tuesday.

The news of Inzaghi's dismissal was confirmed via a short statement on the club's official website, which read: "AC Milan announces that it has sacked first-team coach Filippo Inzaghi and thanks him for the work he has done."

Later on Tuesday, Milan confirmed that Mihajlovic -- who had already said that he would be given the role -- had been handed a two-year contract.

Milan said on their official website: "After spells in charge of Bologna, Catania, Fiorentina, the Serbian national team and his last experience at Sampdoria, Sinisa Mihajlovic is officially the new coach of the Rossoneri.

"The 46-year-old from Vukovar arrives with 156 matches as a coach in Serie A and 11 in the Italian Cup behind him, and not to mention nine World Cup qualifiers in charge of Serbia.

"As a player, Mihajlovic was a teammate to ex-Milan great Dejan Savicevic during their days together at Red Star Belgrade before arriving in Italy and Serie A where he would enjoy the most success in terms of titles and trophies at capital club Lazio.

"Mihajlovic was renowned for his work-rate, commitment and also as a dead-ball specialist during his playing career and is good friends with Milan legends Andriy Shevchenko, Filippo Inzaghi and Clarence Seedorf.

"Good luck and welcome coach!"

Inzaghi, who starred for Milan as a striker between 2001 and 2012, had replaced Seedorf as Rossoneri boss last year but he oversaw a disappointing campaign in which the club finished 10th in Serie A, their worst position in 17 years.

Mihajlovic secured Europa League football for Sampdoria thanks to a seventh-placed Serie A finish last season, with his side picking up 56 points, four more than Milan managed under Inzaghi.

Seven-time European champions Milan are currently seeking to invest heavily in the squad after a disappointing few years, with Thai businessman Bee Taechaubol set to buy a 48 percent stake for a reported €500 million.
