Sinisa Mihajlovic is set to be appointed as the new coach of AC Milan after Filippo Inzaghi was relieved of his duties on Thursday, the ANSA news agency has reported. Inzaghi was unable to guide the Rossoneri into Europe next season during his first year at the helm and "has been informed by the club, with great regret, that there will be a change in coach next season," a statement apparently released to ANSA by Milan said. The path is now clear for Mihajlovic to be appointed after he held talks with Milan president Silvio Berlusconi and general manager Adriano Galliani on Wednesday night. Mihajlovic left Berlusconi's residence with Galliani on Wednesday night, with both reportedly looking in high spirits. The former Inter Milan midfielder, who was also assistant to Roberto Mancini at the Nerazzurri until 2008, is a free agent after announcing his departure from Sampdoria on Monday. After Carlo Ancelotti turned down Milan's offer on Tuesday, the Rossoneri turned their attention to the 46-year-old Serbian, who was due to be shown around the club's Milanello training ground on Thursday. He secured Europa League football for Sampdoria thanks to a seventh-placed Serie A finish this season -- and his side picked up 56 points, four more than Milan managed under Inzaghi. That achievement saw Mihajlovic linked with a move to Napoli, while Fenerbahce also tried to tempt him, but Milan's insistence following Ancelotti's refusal appears to have convinced him to sit on the bench of a former rival. Milan are keen to resolve who will be their coach next season as soon as possible so planned investment in the squad can commence. Berlusconi has vowed to invest heavily this summer to restore the club to the top as they prepare for a second straight season without European football.
