AC Milan's Riccardo Montolivo has surgery to remove pins in leg

AC Milan captain Riccardo Montolivo has undergone surgery to remove pins from his left leg.

The Italy international broke his left leg during a pre-World Cup friendly against the Republic of Ireland in London 12 months ago.

The 30-year-old midfielder returned to action on Nov. 30 and has made nine league appearances since for the Rossoneri.

A statement from Milan read: "AC Milan announces that Riccardo Montolivo has successfully had the pins removed from his left tibia.

"The surgery went well and the surgeons are very happy with the outcome."

Montolivo is expected back in training for preseason preparations.

Milan, coached by Filippo Inzaghi have endured a difficult season. Last weekend's 3-0 defeat at Napoli was their third straight loss.

They are 11th in the Serie A standings with four games remaining and host second-placed Roma on Saturday.
