AC Milan sale backed by Paolo Maldini and Andriy Shevchenko

AC Milan legends Paolo Maldini and Andriy Shevchenko have both spoken in favour of the sale of the club by current owner Silvio Berlusconi, although the latter would prefer if Berlusconi would stay on as president.

The sale of the Rossoneri appears to be imminent with investors from Thailand and China meeting with Berlusconi over the past week.

It would bring an end to 29 years of Berlusconi control, but Maldini believes it is an inevitable step that his former club would only stand to gain from.

"It's a good idea," he told reporters after appearing in a charity game at the San Siro on Monday. "If investors can come and pay the kind of money that is being mentioned..."

Shevchenko agrees, saying that the good of the club must come first, and considering the results on the field over the past two years something must be done.

"I'm a Milan fan and whatever happens, I just hope it's positive," said the Ukrainian. "I hope that the president remains and that he can lead Milan back to the top."

Milan are set to end the season with a host of new club records -- but of the negative variety.

Even if they win their final four games of the season, the club would only reach 55 points, which is two fewer than the record low for a season since there were three points for a win -- that record was set last season.

Never before have the Rossoneri won fewer than 20 games in a single campaign, and they have only half of that at present.

Eleventh is the lowest position Milan have finished under Berlusconi, and given their current form it is not to be excluded that they drop below that before the season is out.

"I don't know what to say -- the results are what they are. To be honest, it's been a really negative season," added Maldini.
