AC Milan hoping for Europe, must play Inter derby to point of death - Inzaghi

AC Milan coach Filippo Inzaghi wants his side to play next weekend's derby with Inter Milan "to the point of death," admitting his side's season depends on picking up a win in the city derby.

Speaking after his side's 1-1 draw with Sampdoria on Sunday night -- a result which left the Rossoneri seven points adrift of a qualifying berth for the Europa League next season with eight games remaining -- Inzaghi said they can no longer afford to drop points if they are to snatch a place in Europe.

"Until it's not mathematically impossible, we've still got to believe in Europe," he told Sky Sport Italia. "We've got to keep our hopes alive by playing every game to the point of death, starting with the derby. We've still got the chance to gratify ourselves."

According to Sky's studio reporter, former Milan forward Zvonimir Boban, the current Rossoneri do not have the quality to finish inside the top six.

Inzaghi did not share his view that his players are "awful" and that he "only has one concept of playing."

Boban said: "I realised the true value of the Milan side tonight. To say you're satisfied after a game like that is really pushing it. When you see the game again, you'll change your mind, trust me."

Inzaghi replied: "If Samp changed their style at the start of the second half, then it must mean we caused them problems."

Not according to Boban, who said: "It's because Samp were truly awful in the first half."

"Well of course, when we play well it's only because our opponents are awful, no problem," replied Inzaghi with a tone of irony mirrored by Boban's final say on the subject: "Fine, then you played a fantastic, unique and unrepeatable game."

Inzaghi said he was pleased with everything other than the result, but with eight games left to save his side's season, he needs points more than anything heading into next weekend's derby at the San Siro.

That game will shape the season of both clubs, who are separated by just one point and seem set to miss out on Europe next season.
